Also known as ‘Black Gram/ Matpe Bean’, grown in the South Asia, lentil-like beans, have black skins covering creamy white interior.
It is one of the most highly prized dals of India, often used for the preparation of popular & delicious ‘Kali dal or Maa ki dal’ and ‘Dal Makhni’.It is packed with proteins and quality fiber.
When cooked, it has strong, earthy flavor and adds more distinct flavor from its black skin.
Basic Cooking Instruction: Wash, rinse & soak 5-6hrs. Add 3cups of water/ cup of dal,bring to boil. Lower the heat, simmer 45-50minutes or until tender & soft (add more water as needed). Whisk lightly, remove the floating foam. Flavor with butter or oil, salt to taste and dal masala seasoning if desired. Cook uncovered over low heat until desired consistency. Serve warm with steamed basmati rice, flat bread and choice of any veggie.
