This popular Japanese spice mixture translates as seven-flavor or seven-spice mix. Also known as ‘Shichimi togarashi’, taste is somewhat dominated by the chili, but not overwhelmingly. Used as a table condiment to be sprinkled over steamed rice, soups, noodles, grilled meats, steamed vegetables or fried foods. It adds both heat & flavor to the dishes. It works well with fatty foods such as unagi (broiled eel), tempuras, shabu shabu (small bits of food cooked in rich broth), noodle dishes, and yakitori (grilled dishes).
