Often confused with a completely unrelated spice ‘Shahi Jeera (Black Caraway Seed)’,
or ‘Kalunji Seed (Nigella Sativa)
Black Cumin seeds (Kala Jeera) is an exotic spice, mostly cultivated in Kashmir. Seeds are
very thin, small crescent shaped and almost black or dark brown in color, with a distinct rich, nutty, earthy taste.
Black cumin Seed is sweeter than cumin.
Suggested Uses:
On frying or cooking, the taste develop a richer, nutty flavor and scent which greatly
enhances the foods.
Kala Jeera is very popular in Northern Indian & Kashmiri cuisine. Often used to flavor rice & biryani dishes. Also used to flavor vegetable and meat dishes, curries, soups, stews, kebabs, and meat and/or vegetables kormas.
Kala jeera may be baked into breads, added to curry pastes and blends.
Toast and sprinkle it over fried or boiled egg, raita or dal tadka.
