Chakalaka is a South African most beloved side vegetable dish, usually spicy, has been South Africans staple food for generations. Chakalaka is prepared with tomatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, red hot chili pepper, white beans, cauliflower or white cabbage and traditionally served with bread, stews or curries.
Ingredients: Peri peri chili, oregano, cumin, garlic, coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, fennel, mustard.
Recipe to make Chakalala:
Warm ½ cup oil in a cooking pot, add 1 large diced onion, 2 red or green bell pepper diced, stir fry until soft. Add 4 large carrots peeled and grated, 6 large tomatoes diced, 2 cup cabbage, 2 green chilies diced & ½ inch grated ginger, cook until golden brown. Add 16oz of baked beans or white cooked white cannellini beans, sprinkle 4 tsp of ‘Chakalala spice mix’ into it, stir and cook covered for 15 min on medium heat. Use freshly chopped coriander to garnish.
