Ponni Rice
Ponni Rice is a variety of thin medium grain hybrid rice, widely cultivated and popular in southern India. It has a rich nutty flavor, less starchy, silky texture, and widely appreciated for its sweet nature and delicious taste.
Highly preferred with south Indian vegetarian meals and widely used for various special dishes like Lemon Rice, Sakkara Pongal, Curd Rice.
Ponni rice is popular for diabetic patients for its low
glycemic index, and easily digested.
Cooking Instructions for plain rice:
- In a sauce pan add 1 ½ cup of water/ Cup of washed & rinsed rice, add 1 tsp salt (optional)
- Stir lightly, bring to a rolling boil, lower the heat, cover with lid and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, let the rice steamed in the covered pot at least another 5 minutes or until the rice has absorbed the liquid.
- Drizzle a little butter or ghee into the rice (optional), fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
1 Cup of Rice will yield: 2 ½ cup of cooked rice.
