Star Anise
(Illicium verum)
Also called ‘ Badian / Badiane’’ or ‘Star aniseed’
Star Anise is the dried, star-shaped seed pod containing the seeds of the Chinese evergreen star anise plant. Both the seeds and the pods have a warm sweet spicy note and licorice-like flavor- similar to anise seed but more potent.
It is widely used in Asian and Indian cuisine to enhance the anise flavor.
Suggested Uses:
It is a major ingredient in the Indian garam masala blend and Chinese five spice powder.
It is more often used to flavor liqueurs, as well as baked goods and to make spiced tea.
The whole pods are simmered in sauces, marinades, soups or broths. Also added to
braised dishes and stews to infuse flavor and are removed at the end of cooking.
Health Benefits:
Star anise is packed with protective antioxidants which neutralize damaging free radicals in the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, star anise is prescribed as a digestive aid, promoting health of female reproductive organs and for lactating mothers to increase
breast milk secretion.
